You could be missing 9 of your digits on your hands and you could still count how many days of school are left for me.
ONE. It's a very solitary number, but I like it lots right about now.
The kids were toast today, but I, on the other hand, learned a few things.
- No matter how long it took me to get to work today (or how late I was because I really took my time), I learned that I needed to take my time. I was 4 cars behind a wreck this morning. Actually, I believe it happened as I was stopped behind a work van (that should have been moving), wondering why we weren't moving, dammit, because don't we all have to get to work some time this morning?
- Things happen for a reason. There was a D.A.R.E. officer one or two cars behind the wreck, in front of me. Had she not been there to call for additional help, and then get out in the rain in her school attire (black heeled boots, black pants, dress shirt, lanyard with school ID) to direct traffic through that intersection, we might still be sitting there.
- Chevy trucks will always RULE over Ford sedans. I saw it with my very own eyes this morning. After all, it was the reason I was sitting in traffic. The Chevy pick-up truck looked like it was new enough to have just gotten rid of the temp tags... and it ate the Ford's front end for breakfast, burped it up, and came back for more. (And YES, I'm biased in this situation.... I will ALWAYS drive a Chevy or a car from another division of Chevy. But I AM reporting the facts here... the Chevy won.)
- Life is short, and you never know when something is going to smack you right in the middle of the forehead and bring your world crashing down. We learned that one of our middle school teachers recently found out that he has multiple brain tumors and was having surgery today to see if they could be removed. Even if they couldn't remove them, they were going to biopsy them to see what kind they were and to determine the next step. At best, the doctors say he might have 1 or 2 years to live. Cheezus cripes on a cracker.
- We've been lucky thus far weather-wise and how it correlates to being in a brick building with no A/C. Today was the first humid day where it was even noticeable with paper -- the paper just drooped in your hand when you picked it up. Tomorrow and Friday? We're gonna melt. 85-90 degrees and HUMID for Thursday. 90+ and HUMID for Friday. I've already got my outfits picked out for both days. I'm going to wear my clear, nekkid suit. It has totally breathable material and doesn't cling to the body. Think maybe they'll send me home for my choice of fashion? Sweet. We can only hope.
- Paper cuts fucking hurt, no matter where you get them and what type of paper gives them to you. I got one today under my thumb nail from a corrugated cardboard box. WTF?!??? Good thing there weren't kids within earshot when that happened. It hurts now, but it's gonna hurt like a som'bitch tomorrow.
So, let's pray that I make it through tomorrow without having to don my Clear Nekkid Suit. Let's also pray that we teachers don't lose our shit before the kids walk out the doors and hop on the busses for their last bus ride home for this school year. Let me tell you, it has come very close to shit being lost all over the building by our teachers. It has the potential to get real deep, if you know what I mean...
ONE.
